Road to College

Scores are back and scholars are feeling good

Juniors at Alpha: Cindy Avitia sat for the SAT in April and recently received their scores. Many significantly outperformed their previous scores and are confident they have the competitive edge they need for their top college choices. A few students, Quoc, Andrea, and Nhi spoke to us about their current sentiments toward the road to college.

“What helped me this time around was dedication and motivation. I’m always competing with myself, trying to do better each time. ” – Quoc.

“The SAT is not only a skills test but an endurance test as well. I had to remind myself that I knew the material and to not overthink the questions.” – Andrea.

“I’m very happy with my scores and think I got what I needed for the schools I’m applying to.” – Nhi.

Many students attribute their success to being able to take the exam in a familiar setting.

“I don’t think I would have done as well as I did if I had to take the SAT in a testing center with strangers. Being in a classroom familiar to me gave me comfort and more confidence.” – Andrea.

Support from parents go a long way

The majority of our students will be the first in their family to attend college. Many not only have to do well in school, but also have to work alongside their parents to support the family. During SAT prep time, the students I met with all felt their parents were extremely supportive and pushed them to focus on their academics. This was a huge sigh of relief for Andrea, who normally would work on Sundays, to spend that time doing practice tests.

“I felt bad but told my mom that if I wasn’t helping out as much around the house, it’s because I’m studying. She was encouraging and knew how important it was for me to do well.” – Andrea.

“My favorite quote from my mom is ‘you must sacrifice what you have for what you want.'” – Quoc.

Andrea’s face lit up and said that her mother gave her similar advice  – “You must sacrifice what you have for something better.”

For these students, going to college is not just to satisfy a personal goal, but is a way of thanking their parents for the endless love, support, and sacrifices they made to ensure a better future for them.

As students wrap up the school year, we wish all of them a great summer!
