Alpha's Story
Schools Created to Serve East San José
In 2010, local parents came together in pursuit of an excellent school for their students. The result was Alpha.
Alpha Public Schools is a network of four public charter schools committed to providing access to an outstanding education. An Alpha education prepares students in TK-12th grade for success in college and career.

Celebrating More Than a Decade
of Learning in East San José
A group of East San José parents join together to establish a charter middle school that would support their children in developing the academic skills and character habits needed to succeed in college and to thrive in their lives.
Alpha: Blanca Alvarado Middle School opens its doors to 6-8th grade students, launching the first Alpha Public School.
Answering the call for more high-quality public schools in East San José, Alpha: José Hernández Middle School opens its doors, initially starting with 6th graders, and expanding over the next few years to serve grades 5-8th grade.
Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School opens its doors to its first class of 9th graders. Over the next three years, Alpha: Cindy Avitia would “grow up” by adding one grade level each year, becoming a four-year high school by 2018.
Alpha: Cornerstone Academy, a nearby high-performing public charter elementary school, joins the Alpha Public Schools charter school network, creating access to a full TK-12 continuum at Alpha. Alpha: Cornerstone will add middle school grades and become Alpha’s first TK-8 school.
Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School graduates its first class of seniors. 90% of those graduates go on to start college in Fall 2019, with most becoming the first in their family to do so.
Alpha: Blanca Alvarado and Alpha: José Hernández begin their elementary grade expansion with TK and Kindergarten, joining Alpha: Cornerstone on the path to serving grades TK-8.
In response to COVID-19, Alpha Public Schools quickly pivots to virtual instruction, working closely with families to provide access to laptops and Wi-Fi to 100% of Alpha scholars.
Beyond academics, Alpha responds to the pandemic by providing emergency funds and food to local families impacted by COVID-19.
After implementing a hybrid learning model in the prior school year to meet our families’ range of needs, all Alpha Public Schools students return to in-person learning.
Alpha Public Schools celebrates our 10th anniversary, honoring school namesake and community leader Blanca Alvarado with a student performance in celebration of her accomplishments.
With Alpha: Blanca Alavarado and Alpha: José Hernández now fully grown to serve all elementary grades, Alpha Public Schools is operating at full scale, with three TK-8 schools and one high school.
Engaging Education for All
Alpha’s schools put students on the path to success—from transitional kindergarten to college. We do this by creating an engaging educational environment with high academic expectations, fostering collaborative relationships between students and teachers, and leveraging data to differentiate instruction that meets students’ needs.
