Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School
Led by Principal Will Eden and a team of dedicated and skilled teachers, Alpha: Cindy Avitia prepares all students for college with the knowledge, skills, and self-discipline needed to succeed. Further, Alpha also supports families through every step of the college process to ensure students successfully apply to, enroll, and succeed throughout college. Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School is a small, safe and tuition-free community school that opened its doors to its first class of 9th graders in the summer of 2015.
We are honored to name Alpha’s first high school in honor of Alpha’s first board president, Cindy Avitia. Born and raised in East San Jose, Cindy served her community as an activist across many issues, a social and civil rights advocate, and an immigration attorney. Alpha is honored to memorialize Cindy, her commitment to empowering her community, and the spirit of service she embodied.

OVERVIEW FLYER: English / Spanish / Vietnamese
Born out of the community’s activism in East San Jose, Alpha designed its high school using a community-centered design process. This process began with assembling a design team of parents, teachers, Alpha students, current East San Jose high schools students, and various education experts. Through local connections and knocking on doors, the design team interviewed over 80 stakeholders in East San Jose. These conversations validated Alpha’s mission – preparing every student to thrive in higher education and beyond – and developed our understanding of the assets in the community supporting this goal, as well as the challenges in-between.
While many students get lost in a large system, Alpha will create small community to support every student. Every student will have a single advisor who will meet with the student one-on-one once a week to review their grades and progress towards their goals. Families will receive regular updates from these advisors concerning their student’s progress.
Less than half of all students from the East Side who graduate from high school, graduate with the courses they need to apply to California colleges. All Alpha students will complete the courses required to apply to any college, and AP courses will be offered in all subjects.
Students at Alpha: Cindy Avitia will not just learn to use technology, but to create it. Home to Google, Yahoo, Facebook, and many others, Alpha is located in the technology capital of the world, Silicon Valley. Alpha: Cindy Avitia will be the first school in East San Jose to teach students four years of computer science, ensuring that students are prepared to complete for the best careers in Silicon Valley.
Students will not just complete multiple choice tests at Alpha: Cindy Avitia. They will create and present projects, presentations, newspapers, speeches, and much more to demonstrate their learning. Through these creative works, students will be able to share their work with not just their teachers, but their peers, parents, and professionals.
Alpha: Cindy Avitia students will have the opportunity to gain for experience through internships with local companies and organizations.
Alpha will begin college advising for students and families beginning in the 9th grade. This will include beginning 9th grade with an overnight trip to a University, college planning classes for parents, a college savings account for every student, and a college advisor to help each student apply to college, get financial aid, and apply for scholarships.
In order to be prepared for college and a career, students must not just learn facts, but also how to think and discipline themselves. Alpha: Cindy Avitia will teach students strategies for learning more, more quickly, and for managing their own learning, as they will be required to do in college.
